ASA (Acrylic Styrene Acrylonitrile) is a 3D printable plastic similar to ABS but with better UV resistance. It was developed to withstand harsh weather, making it ideal for outdoor applications. ASA features high impact and temperature resistance but is more challenging to print. Common issues include warping and the emission of potentially harmful fumes during printing due to Styrene.

Best Practices

To minimize printing problems with ASA, such as warping and poor adhesion, consider the following tips:

  1. Invest in a Good Build Surface: Use Kapton tape on your heated bed to improve adhesion. If you have a glass bed, PET sheets can also provide good adhesion while keeping a smooth surface. Adjust the Z-axis offset in your slicer to account for the tape thickness.
  2. Adjust Temperature and Cooling Settings: ASA requires higher temperatures, which can lead to overheating. Start with a higher extruder temperature for the first few layers, then reduce it by 5 degrees for subsequent layers to prevent overheating while maintaining adhesion.
  3. Use Slow Speeds for the Cooling Fan: To combat overheating, set the cooling fan to 10-25% speed. This helps cool the part without causing warping or shrinking.

Pro-Tips

  • Apply a slurry of ABS or ASA and acetone to the heated build plate for better adhesion.
  • ASA can be smoothed with controlled exposure to acetone vapors.
  • Use HIPS as a dissolvable support material for ASA prints, and select the Dense Supports option in your slicer for optimal results.
